VI

There is nothing special about love, Cato said. We were on a stoop

watching the deserted street concede all the day’s solid bounty

to mist. We were too hungered by fear, too afraid to find food

in the midnight stretch between here and Africa, as though this too

was not taking our lives into our own hands. When I go back

to Africa, Cato began, before my mind wandered.

I could tell you of the sadness of my father, how like his father

before him he too came from nowhere, a place behind the mountains

two days from the river to the east, how he spent half his life combing

for the names inscribed in his blood. Believing himself defeated,

he spent the latter half conceding all territories of the goodness within him.
